The passion fruit vine, where the flower as well as the fruit is taken from, was discovered by Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors and missionaries sometime in the 16th century. They found the flower being very unusual looking, just like a crown of thorns, situated on Jesus Christ’s head, which is the reason it was named the passion flower.
